If I'm not mistaken, the cause of the demise and closure of this unique store lies ultimately with the extremist fanatics who planted a car bomb outside Balfour House. This has caused the council to impose stricter parking restrictions, which have caused a considerable reduction in the store's clientele. The final result was, not surprisingly, lack of sales revenue and subsequent closure. If the Jewish Community Offices were removed from Balfour House and relocated elsewhere, Owen Owen would have probably still thrived to this day!

I had my first Saturday job there in Menswear Dept. Does anybody remember the fearsome store detective? I seem to remeber her name was Grace Tiplady
