My grandfather, Joseph Hopkins, was an inspector for the gas company and lived in the adjoining company houses in Lee Street, a two up two down terrace. He and my grandmother had 14 children there but only 6 survived. He retired at the end of August 1939 and was given the choice of a cash payment or rent free accommodation for the rest of his life. He accepted the latter but died 3 weeks later when I was 3 weeks old.

Barbara, a number of my aunts, uncles and cousins lived in Lee Street, some of whom were there in the 1930s. In the 1931 Kellys Street Directory I saw that your grandfather Joseph William Hopkins lived at no.11. My family weren't there then, but probably soon afterwards. My aunt and uncle, Ivy and Fred Hunt, lived next door at no.10, and Elsie and Bert Risley lived at no.18. I don't know if you have seen any photos of Lee Street, but I've just added two to our gallery. They are numbered 7317 and 7318. You can see your grandfather's house in 7318. Colin

Thank you for that. I used to live in friern barnet and knew lee street before it was demolished. The only other residents my grandmother kept I touch with were called Paris. My Mother and her siblings went to Garfield Road School.

Barbara, most of my family also went to Garfield School, back to at least the 1920s. Have you looked at the photos of Garfield Road School in the gallery?
