In the 1970s I enjoyed sailing my scratch-built radio-controlled model boats in the nearby pond, when it had water, which was about half the time. This helped to foster my early interest in engineering. I see that the statue is now fenced in, to help preserve it, but I wonder if children who could climb the statue's base will feel it was more part of their history, than those who only saw it from behind a fence.
