Gary, Derek Hembrow did very well in the transport business and even worked for Richard Branson. Derek lives near Hereford and attended the 2010 Garfield Reunion.

Peter turner,
Thanks for that info, i'm a little confused, you say derek hembrow, who was RJ hembrow?
I can vividly see his face, always covered in coal dust, he would have been about 35-40ish when i was a kid of 8 in 1972, it looked like he had curley grey hair under his cap, maybe he was just a driver who worked for him, but it was always him that delivered in the bounds green area, Do you know where his lorry depot was?
Thanks for the info by the way- Gary.

Message for Gary Cook (anonymous?) - more information from local expert Jim Keogh is that the Hembrow owner was Reg Hembrow and there was one driver called Tony. Reg was a survivor from the Japanese prisons in World War 2. Our Derek Hembrow, born 1942/3, went into the car game and eventually big transport business contracts and did very well. A great rags to riches story!

Reg Hembrow was the owner and my grandad. He passed some years back.

Hi Karen. You must be related to Derek, who would be about 29 in 1972, like me, and he was the Hembrow I knew and met him again at the 2010 Garfield Reunion, but he has not been in touch since. However he is still on my mailing list for the annual Garfield New Southgate Reunion so we might see him again we hope. Our next reunion is 17 June 2017 at the Conservative Club in the High Road New Southate, Noon to late on. All free food and admission. Good luck.
