Comments:
My parents ran the off-license (selling grocery as well) on The Avenue, New Southgate from 1957 to 1962. I believe it was number 7 The Avenue but I'm not certain. The council intended to demolish the properties and build on the land and so we moved. I sort of recall us being on the corner but again, I'm not certain. Do you think the shop in the photo could be our off-license?

For Elizabeth Simpson - I was born into the flat above the shop and was told the shop name was Phillpots at the time in 1943. At some point during 1945-8 we moved to 20 Upper Park Rd and stayed until 1964. My gran lived at 5 Holmesdale about 50 feet away in a basement and my first memory is sitting in her basement kitchen. Gran came to stay with us from about 1950 to her death in 1964.

To Mrs Mc Gowan. I knew Kenny Zinzan. We lived next door to him. He was a fireman. Chris was his brother's name. They lived at no 59, we lived at 58. A few people that attend the reunions remember them. Bye and from Jim

Thats nice to hear. I think my great grandma lived at number 22 The Avenue n11. They were quite a big family I think. Her daughter was my nan but I don't remember her as she died in 1966 and i was only a baby. Her name was Gladys and I do remember her sister Henrietta and she was lovely.

Sorry, your nans house may have been no. 22, as a Zinzan lived on that side for some time in the 40s. I will gat some info if I can. Ken, who lived at no. 59, may have been her son. What was gladys' surname? bye and take care, Jim

Hi Jim Gladys's surname when she married was Eames and she went to live in Russell Lane. Her husband Wilfred was a member of the social club round the corner in Oakleigh Road where he raced pigeons.

My first five years were above the corner shop and Gran was 50 ft away in 5 Holmesdale Road, Annie Newby, but I never left the flat in this condition - not guilty.
