Did Carr's make boot polish? My grandfather, Tom James Harries, who lived in St Paul's Road, New Southgate (the site is now part of the playground of St Paul's School) worked for a firm of that name. They were apparently known locally as 'the blacking smackers'. He was a plumber by trade but employed in the maintenance of company houses where the managers lived. I've never been able to locate Carr's and, as grandad died before my sister and I were born, never had the chance to ask him.

In the late 60s I did holiday work at John Dale Ltd in Brunswick Park Road, which had links to Carr & Sons. Carr & Day & Martin still exists. See www.blancoandbull.com/boot-cleaning/carr-day-martin/ for some more information.

You are right they made boot polish, also a kind of metal polish. Carr, Day and Martin. There was some pictures of the firm's outing and some adverts they had at the last reunion we had 7pm7pm7pm

The foam started a bit further up the brook near Ossidge Lane I think. There was a bit of a waterfall there.
