My great great grandfather and grandmother both worked at the Asylum, in fact it is where they met, I have found them both on the census, she was a laundress and he was a lunatic attendant. I had no idea, when I did my mental health nurse training in the 1990's my grandmother used to say "why do you want to be a lunatic attendant". I kept telling her that's not what we say now, then she explained that her grandfather was one of the attendants, so strange to know that I was following in his footsteps. I hope these words do not offend anybody, these were the terms that were used at the time. The census I am referring to is the 1881 census and then again in the 1891, but by then my great great grandmother and father were married and she was at home with the children, he was still an attendant. They lived in Garfield Road and later in Holly Park Road. History is so interesting.
